Pietro De Maria a commencé ses études de piano à Venise avec Giorgio Vanello. À treize ans, il remporte le premier Prix du Concours Alfred Cortot à Milan. Il obtient son diplôme dans la classe de Gino Gorini au Conservatoire de Venise. Il se perfectionne dans la classe de Maria Tipo au conservatoire de Genève, où il se voit attribuer en 1988 le premier Prix de Virtuosité avec félicitations du jury.
Il se voit décerner ensuite, en 1990, le Prix de la Critique au Concours Tchaïkovsky à Moscou et le premier Prix au concours international Dino Ciani à Milan. En 1994, le premier Prix au concours Géza Anda à Zürich et en 1997, le Prix Mendelssohn à Hambourg.
En 2010, année du bicentenaire de Chopin, Pietro De Maria a célébré le compositeur polonais à Berlin, Paris, Varsovie, Zurich, Rome, Pékin, Singapour, au Festival de Nohant. Il a enregistré pour Naxos les trois sonates de Clementi; et pour Decca l'intégrale des sonates pour piano et violoncelle de Beethoven, avec Enrico Dindo.

De Bach à Ligeti, Pietro De Maria a un répertoire très vaste. Il a enregistré pour Decca une intégrale des œuvres de Frédéric Chopin. « Ces enregistrements figurent parmi les meilleurs qu'on puisse entendre de l'œuvre de Chopin et surpassent aisément ceux de la plupart des grands noms du catalogue » assure le critique Bryce Morrisson de International Piano. « C'est une version de rêve des Études de Chopin », précise Étienne Moreau dans Diapason. Nach der Auszeichnung mit dem Kritikerpreis 1990 beim Moskauer Tschaikowsky-Wettbewerb gewann Pietro De Maria Erste Preise bei renommierten Klavierwettbe-werben wie dem Dino Ciani-Wettbewerb (1990) an der Mailänder Scala und dem Concours Géza Anda (1994) in Zürich. 1997 wurde ihm in Hamburg der Mendelssohn-Preis zugesprochen.
Pietro De Marias rege Konzerttätigkeit führt ihn in die bedeutendsten Säle und Festivals Europas und Übersee; als Solist ist er unter Dirigenten wie Roberto Abbado, Gary Bertini, Myung-Whun Chung, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Daniele Gatti, Alan Gilbert, Eliahu Inbal, Marek Janowski, Ton Koopman, Michele Mariotti, Ingo Metzmacher, Gianandrea Noseda, Corrado Rovaris, Yutaka Sado, Sándor Végh und Jonathan Webb aufgetreten. Zudem ist er regelmäßig mit namhaften Kammermusikpartnern zu hören.
1967 wurde De Maria in Venedig geboren, wo er auch seine pianistische Ausbildung genoss. Sein Talent zeigte sich früh: bereits mit 13 Jahren gewann er den 1. Preis beim Internationalen Klavierwettbewerb Alfred Cortot in Mailand. Später setzte er seine Studien bei Maria Tipo am Genfer Konservatorium fort, wo er 1988 mit einem “Premier Prix de Virtuosité“ abschloss.
Sein Repertoire umfasst Werke von Bach bis Ligeti. Er ist der erste italienische Pianist, der das gesamte Klavierwerk von Chopin in Konzerten zur Aufführung brachte. In den letzten Jahren setzte er einen Schwerpunkt auf die Werke von Bach und nahm beide Bände des Wohltemperierten Klaviers sowie die Goldberg-Variationen in sein Konzert-Repertoire auf.
Seine CD-Einspielungen des gesamten Klavierwerks von Chopin sowie Bachs WTK und der Goldberg-Variationen bei Decca finden bei Kritikern und der Fachpresse – Diapason, International Piano, MusicWeb-International, Pianiste – viel Anerkennung und Beifall.
Pietro De Maria ist Akademiemitglied von Santa Cecilia und unterrichtet an der Universität Mozarteum in Salzburg. Er gehört dem Dozententeam von La Scuola di Maria Tipo an, ein Ausbildungsprojekt, welches von der Accademia di Musica di Pinerolo initiiert wurde.

The Italian pianist, Pietro De Maria, studied piano with Giorgio Vianello and Gino Gorini. Revealing a precocious talent, he won First Prize at the Alfred Cortot International Piano Competition in Milan at the age of 13. He graduated from the Conservatory of Venice and continued his studies with Maria Tipo at the Conservatory of Geneva, where he obtained the Premier Prix de Virtuositי with the highest honours in 1988. After receiving the Critics' Prize at the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow (1990), he won First Prize in other prestigious international piano competitions, such as the Dino Ciani - Teatro La Scala in Milan (1990), the Géza Anda in Zurich (1994), and the Mendelssohn Award in Hamburg (1997).
An active concert pianist, Pietro De Maria has played as soloist with the best known orchestras, with conductors of the stature of Roberto Abbado, Gary Bertini, Myung-Whun Chung, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Daniele Gatti, Alan Gilbert, Eliahu Inbal, Marek Janowski, Ton Koopman, Michele Mariotti, Ingo Metzmacher, Gianandrea Noseda, Corrado Rovaris, Kwamé Ryan, Yutaka Sado and Sándor Végh.
His repertoire ranges from J.S. Bach to Ligeti. Pietro De Maria is the first Italian pianist to have played Frédéric Chopins complete piano works in public concerts. These works have been recorded by Decca and have received important acknowledgments from international publications of prestige such as Diapason, International Piano and Pianiste. In 2010, bicentennial of the birth of the Polish composer, Pietro De Maria was invited to play F. Chopin in the most important international centers such as Berlin, Paris, Warsaw, Zürich, Rome, the Nohant Festival, Beijing and Singapore.
During the coming seasons, Pietro De Maria will be focusing especially on J.S. Bach, presenting both books of The Well Tempered Clavier as well as the Goldberg Variations in his concerts.
Pietro De Maria has recorded three Sonatas by Clementi for Naxos, a live recital at the Miami International Piano Festival for VAI Audio, and L.v. Beethoven's complete works for cello and piano with Enrico Dindo for Decca.
Pietro De Maria teaches at the School of Music in Fiesole, at the Academy of Music in Pinerolo and at the Musikdorf Ernen in Switzerland.
